Cookie Decorating for Beginners (and Anyone with a Sweet Tooth)!

I should not be trusted around a piping bag.

There. I said it.

Give me royal icing and a table full of blank sugar cookies, and I will absolutely eat a spoonful before the lesson even starts. There’s just something about that glossy, sugary swirl that makes my inner child scream “LET’S DO THIS.”
And yes, I’m gluten-free.
And yes, I still love sugar cookies more than most holidays.

Which is probably why I keep hosting our Beginner Cookie Decorating Classes at The Creative Jam.

Beginner cookie decorating at The Creative Jam!

They’re sweet. They’re fun. They smell like childhood and Pinterest at the same time. And honestly? They’re kind of therapeutic. There’s something incredibly soothing about outlining a tiny cookie sweater or a flower petal while chatting with the people next to you and pretending you’re on a Food Network show that involves zero judgment.

The next one is coming up in May, and we’re lucky enough to have Talia teaching again—a certified Creative Jam fan favorite. She’s one of those magical humans who can make a cookie look like a bouquet, a pumpkin patch, or a tiny winter wonderland, and still make you feel like you can do it too.

And yes, we always offer a gluten-free option—because frosting is a right, not a privilege.
Fun fact: gluten-free sugar cookies can still be soft, chewy, and absolutely capable of carrying a layer of pastel icing and a whole lot of joy.
Double fun fact: they can also be frozen for future celebrations and shipped to friends and family who need a little sweetness in their mailbox.

We usually offer one of these “Cookie Decorating for Beginners” classes almost every month (except the months when we level up with “The Next Step in Cookie Decorating,” which is exactly what it sounds like—more piping, more detail, and a little extra patience).

But if you’ve never done this before? Start here.
No experience needed. No pressure to be precise. Just some cookies, some colors, some laughs, and a lot of “Wait—I made this?!”

I’ve watched people come in nervous and leave with four decorated cookies in a pretty bakery box, a sugar high, and plans to do it all again next month.
I’ve also watched someone pipe an accidental blob and turn it into a butterfly. It was beautiful. I still think about that butterfly.

So yes, I may be a little frosting-obsessed.
And no, I’m not sorry.
Because sometimes, life is about the big moments.
And sometimes, it’s about a perfectly iced cookie that looks like a daisy and tastes like nostalgia.

Love, sprinkles, and self-control (optional),
Darcy
